The photovoltaic panel is a device capable of converting solar energy into electrical energy through photovoltaic effect. It is composed of various interconnected photovoltaic cells selected for their strength and weather resistance. The cells are enclosed by two layers, the upper layer is in transparent material (usually high strength glass), the lower layer is in insulating material (usually EVA) and framed to allow fixing and the mounting of the terminal block. The base material of the cells is silicon (current research is experimenting with other materials) which can be utilised in different forms and are given the name of the molecular composition:
MONOCRYSTALLINE SILICON: the atoms are organised in an homogeneous framework (monocrystal); are highly efficient (17-18%), are cut from cylindrical ingots, are difficult to manufacture and usually costly. Only for flat surfaces. The output is strongly influenced by the orientation of the panel with respect to sunlight.
POLYCRYSTALLINE SILICON: the atoms are in an heterogeneous structure but organised into localised grains (polycrystal); have a reasonable efficiency (15-16%), production and cutting are simple procedures. Can be used on irregular surfaces. These panels are less sensitive (if compared with Monocrystalline) with their orientation with respect to the sunlight.
TILT AND AZIMUTH
The absorption of energy by a photovoltaic system depends on the positioning of the panel, and is characterised by two parameters:
-tilt, the angle from the horizontal plane.
-azimuth, The angle of orientation with respect to South.
The angle of tilt or inclination (ie the angle that the solar cell makes with the horizontal plane) affects the radiation incident on the absorber surface.
Then, for each latitude and for each azimuth angle (ie the angle formed by the normal to the intercepting surface and the direction of the South) there is an optimum tilt, which allows the panel to maximize the radiation eceived.
